Yes, for most people it is fine. A small glass of juice before breakfast will not do you any harm. What it will not do is work better than it would at any other time of day. The idea that an empty stomach makes juice more potent comes from detox blogs, and for plenty of people it is the worst moment to drink it.
What actually happens when you drink juice on an empty stomach
Juice is fruit sugar and water with the fibre taken out. On an empty stomach there is nothing to slow that sugar down, so it reaches your bloodstream more quickly than the same juice would with a meal. That is the whole effect. Your body copes with it, your liver does its normal job, and an hour later you are roughly where you started.
There is no special absorption window. Your gut takes up vitamins and minerals whether you have eaten or not. A few of them are absorbed better when there is food alongside, which is the next point.
Some nutrients need food, not an empty stomach
Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble, so your body needs some fat in the same meal to take them in properly. Carrot, kale and spinach juice are full of exactly those vitamins. A glass of carrot juice on its own first thing gives you less usable vitamin A than the same juice with a bit of butter on toast or a handful of nuts.
That is the part the empty-stomach advice gets backwards. If your juice is vegetable-led, food alongside it is doing you a favour. Does juicing remove fibre covers what else the machine takes out of the glass.
Who should be careful first thing in the morning
Acid reflux and gastritis
Citrus, tomato and to a lesser degree pineapple are acidic. On an empty stomach there is nothing to dilute that acid, and many people find it burns. If orange juice gives you heartburn, try it with food before you give up on it. A cucumber and apple juice is gentler if you would rather skip the acid altogether.
Trouble with fructose
Apple, pear, mango and watermelon are high in fructose and sorbitol, the two sugars that most often set off bloating and loose stools. Drinking them as juice, on an empty stomach, with no food to slow them down, is the classic way to find out you are sensitive. If that sounds familiar, start with vegetables and lower-sugar fruit: cucumber, celery, carrot, courgette and greens. Our digestion recipes are built around that idea.
Type 2 diabetes
Sugar in a glass is a free sugar, and it arrives faster without food to slow it down. If you have type 2 diabetes, keep the glass small and have it with a meal. The NHS advice applies to all of us: no more than 150ml of juice or smoothie a day. We go through how much juice a day is actually reasonable separately.
Your teeth
Sugar and acid together, sipped slowly with nothing to buffer them, is the combination dentists warn about. NHS guidance is to drink juice with a meal rather than through the day, and it counts as only one of your five a day however much you drink. Does juice count as 5 a day goes through that properly.
Does juice first thing in the morning detox you?
No. Your liver and kidneys filter your blood all day because that is what they are for. No drink switches them on or speeds them up. The morning celery juice routine is a habit, and a habit is fine, but there is nothing in the timing. We go through that in do juice cleanses work, and celery has its own piece on whether celery juice is good for you.
When I actually drink mine
With a meal, or just after one. There is fat in the meal to carry the fat-soluble vitamins, the food slows the sugar, and it is far kinder to your teeth than sipping a glass over an hour. If you want juice as a snack, put something with it. A few nuts, a slice of wholemeal toast, some plain yoghurt. That is the practical version of the best time to drink juice, and if you are new to any of this, is juicing healthy is the place to start.
FAQ
Is juice better on an empty stomach?
No. Nothing about an empty stomach makes juice more effective, and for vegetable juices it works against you, because the fat-soluble vitamins need some fat in the same meal to be absorbed well.
Can I drink celery juice first thing in the morning?
If it suits you, yes. Celery is mild, low in sugar and easy on most stomachs. It just does not do anything extra because of the time of day.
Why does juice upset my stomach in the morning?
Usually the sugar, the acid or the speed. Apple, pear and mango are the common culprits on the sugar side, citrus and tomato on the acid side. Try it with food, make the glass smaller, or switch to something vegetable-led. If it keeps happening, mention it to your GP rather than pushing through it.
Nothing is lost by drinking your juice with breakfast instead of before it. Put some food next to the glass, keep it to 150ml, and treat it as a good part of a meal rather than a morning ritual with special powers.
