Watermelon juice is the closest thing to drinking summer. It’s about ninety-two per cent water, so it’s ridiculously hydrating and very low in calories, and when it’s in season it barely needs any help to taste good. A little ginger and lime is all it takes to stop it being one-note.
This is a three-ingredient juice, which is part of its charm. It’s the one I make when I want something cold and sweet that I can pour a big glass of without thinking about it.
Why these ingredients work
Watermelon is mostly water, so you get a lot of volume and hydration for very few calories, the natural way to feel full without overdoing it. It also contains an amino acid called citrulline, which some research links to better blood flow and less muscle soreness. Ginger adds a warming kick against the cold sweetness, and lime keeps it from tasting flat.
FAQ
Is watermelon high in sugar?
It tastes sweet, but because it’s so watery the actual sugar per glass is modest. One cup of watermelon has about nine grams of sugar, less than most fruit juices.
When’s the best time to make this?
Summer, when watermelon is cheap, sweet and genuinely ripe. Out of season the flavour drops off, so you may want an extra squeeze of lime.
Do I need to remove the seeds?
If you’re using a juicer, seedless watermelon is easiest. A few seeds won’t hurt most juicers, but they can add a bitter note, so scoop out the big ones first.
